Design for Interaction (and the afterlife)

A few days back, I was invited to give a short presentation at the TU Delft to the new first year students of the Design for Interaction (DfI) master of science. Apparently being a DfI alumnus working at the biggest dutch industrial design studio made me an interesting profile to talk to Delft’s future interaction designers… or maybe I was the only one who accepted to come ;-)

I was asked to talk a bit about my experience during the master, especially during my graduation project and how it’s been so far as an interaction designer “in the wild”.

To be perfectly honest, I didn’t have much time to practice it very well, but anyway since the faculty recorded the presentation I figured “why not publish it?”. So here it is…

God! you gotta love Delft

DDEAThere’s a reason why Delft is ranked as the 15th best engineering university in the world, and god, you gotta love them for that!

In Australia, only a crash 3 weeks before the start of the race managed to keep Nuna 5 from being the top dog of the World Solar Challenge so far… After a speedy crash recovery operation, we’re still third by the second day of racing and breathing down the neck of second placed University of Michigan. But watch out Tokai University (leaders so far) ’cause the Nuna team went to Australia to claim their rightful place and beat the competition for the 5th time in a row.

[UPDATE: As of October 27th, Nuna 5 has already surpassed the car from the University of Michigan, so Tokai is next!]

And back in Delft, the Design and Engineering Award is underway with some very, VERY interesting stuff going on.

On this post, you can find a couple of my favourite videos of some of the participating projects from our different faculties, which are just to show off a bit of why Delft is soooo cool ;-) (more…)

Cool greetings from Helsinki!

IMG_0865

The welcoming image I found at Helsinki's airport. Don't forget to read the caption ;-)

I arrived today to Helsinki, where I’ll be attending and giving a small presentation at the EuroCHRIE 2009 Conference which has “experience in the hospitality and tourism industry” as it’s theme this year. Why am I presenting you say? Well, I’ll be talking about part of what I did during my graduation project and introducing the hospitality industry to Panoremo.

I’ll be posting a bit more about the conference in the coming days.

Unfortunately my hotel room (although very nice, pretty and cozy) does not have a very nice view… in fact all I see is the building on the other side of the street. So I can’t really publish any pics of Helsinki right now, but I did find the picture you see here at the airport which I thought was hilarious.

In case you missed the caption it reads:

“Finns are good at for example driving fast, skiing fast, ice-hockey and curling but we’re pretty good at creating new sports too. Judge yourself: Eukonkanto: Wife Carrying competition through an obstacle course. Saappaanheitto: Throwing a rubber boot. Kannykanheitto: Throwing an old mobile phone. Suopotkupallo: Football on a swamp.”

…I think I’m gonna have a bit of fun in this place :-)

Time to say goooood night!

The Hartmannitas... Sofia and Maya Hartmann

The Hartmannitas... Sofia and Maya Hartmann

After a few days visiting my two very cute nieces in France, watching and rediscovering the beauty of Sesame Street with the oldest one (she’s barely 2), not understanding half of what she says to me (she speaks half french and half spanish), having trouble making her go to bed every single night and having her wake me up in the mornings asking me to get out of bed to play with her… I’m all mushy for her, her sister, and anything that has to do with their little world.

So this time I decided to post this very beautiful video that I came across: Andrea Bocelli sings Elmo to sleep! as cute as it gets and it just reminds me of my little Sofia :-D

Ready, set, GREEN!

green_lanternLast Thursday I finally received the green light from my graduation supervisory team, which in fact means that they are confident that I will be able to finish up my MSc. graduation project within the coming 6 weeks and that no matter what, on the 26th of June somewhere in the afternoon, I will finally be leaving my eternal student status behind to officially adopt my new role as a jobless professional with a Master’s degree (albeit, hopefully for not too long).

So anyway, if there are people out there in the Netherlands (or the vicinity) who are interested in the project (“Developing a tool to assess emotions elicited by services”), I will be performing a public presentation of the project on the 26th of June, at the Delft Univeristy of Technology. More details regarding location and time will come shortly.

SIMPSONIZED 2.0!!!

Apparently it’s in fashion.. everybody seems to be yellow these days. With the whole Simpsons movie, there’s a huge hype going around, and of course, I had to be a part of it.

There’s a site where you can create your own simpsonized version of yourself (www.simpsonizeme.com) so I gave it a try. I was not very satisfied with the results since the options were a bit limited, so I decided to take matters into my own hands and Photoshop it on my own… and voila! I’ve been Simpsonized 2.0!

The Puma monk

A couple of days ago, I decided to go with Evula to one of Holland’s main spring atractions… the Keukenhof gardens. Filled with thousands and thousands of blooming flowers of any imaginable color, it was quite a spectacle to see.
But what caught my attention the most, were not the tulips, or the orchids, or anything of the like… it was this Buddhist monk, who’s “lifestyle is shaped so as to support his spiritual practice, to live a simple, happy and meditative life, and attain Nirvana”.

Wikipedia (the new “Holy bible”), tells us that the robes of a Buddhist monk come from “the idea of wearing cheap clothes just to protect the body from weather and climate…. Since dark red was the cheapest colour in Kashmir, the Tibetan tradition has red robes. In the south, yellow played the same role“.
Pay close attention to the fact that they DO NOT mention ANYTHING about the shoes… so our monk decided to follow his vouws in style, with some very cool Pumas that match his ‘raggedy-poor-man’s-robes’

The result of overexposure to EMOTICONS

People say that children of this day and age are more exposed to new technologies and that this might have a negative effect on them. Well, regardless of wheter it’s a good or a bad influence, there is definately AN INFLUENCE, and I found tangible proof for it:

Here’s my beautiful niece Mariana who seems to have a severe case of overexposure to EMOTICONS.

They’re made out of MEAT!

I came across this little story on the internet and I thought it was absolutely brilliant, so I decided to reproduce it here for anyone out there waisting their time reading this page.
BTW, the illustration was made by yours trully
So here it goes…
THEY'RE MADE OUT OF MEAT!
by Terry Bisson

"They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"Meat. They're made out of meat."

"Meat?"

"There's no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, and probed them all the way through. They're completely meat."

"That's impossible. What about the radio signals? The messages to the stars?"

"They use the radio waves to talk, but the signals don't come from them. The signals come from machines." (more...)

Ik denk rood, ik denk wit, Ik ben Ajacied

So I finally went to an Ajax game after almost 6 years of living in this country. Yesterday night Ajax was playing their UEFA cup game against a very weak norwegian team called IK Start, so it was sure that it wouldnt be a sold-out stadium, which made it a whole lot easier to get tickets. So off I went with a couple of friends, and finally got to see the fantastic sphere at the Amsterdam ArenA.

At the end, it was an easy 4-0 win for the Amsterdamers and they assured themselves a place on the next phase of the cup (a long season which hopefully will end in Glasgow’s final around may next year).

For anyone interested you can see some pictures and a video by clicking on the image below.

World Crap Germany 2006

Well, the tournament is in it’s semifinal stages right now… but frankly, it’s all over for quite some time now.

What a hatefull World Cup this turned out to be. No attractive football, no underdogs becoming the tournament’s surprise, the lowest goal average of all time only above that of Italia ’90, no shinning stars, the true fans not being able to get into the stadiums, and a whole bunch of corporate sponsor seats full of people who didn’t even know who was playing…. absolutely hateful!

Now we have an all european final (first time since 1982 and only the 4th in history) with the most hateful teams ever. The italians with their defensive destructive-football, Germany (who although very solid, would have gone no where if they were not the hosts), the all too hateful France with their lack of goals and their aging Zidane (more…)

Hup Holland, Hup!

It’s finally here! Tomorrow, the long 4 year wait will be over for all of us football fans in the world.. the World Cup is finally back!

Unfortunately for me, Colombia once again failed to qualify… so I’ll have to be rooting for another team thie time. Luckily, my second home managed to easily qualify for the tournament, and so Oranje will be coming back to the world stage after a short absence in Korea/Japan 2002.

Last time the dutch were on a World Cup in 1998, they were beaten by Brazil on the semifinals (those damn penalties have never favoured the dutch…) and this time they hope to finally break the curse and become world champions.

Remember, 32 years ago in Germany 74, they marveled the world with ‘Total football’ under the command of Johan Cruijff. 14 years later also in Germany, it was Marco van Basten who scored a precious goal against the USSR in the final to give the Netherlands their first European Cup.

It is now 18 years from that, and of course they are back in Germany, and van Basten is back… all the signs are there: Oranje is up for BIG STUFF in this World Cup!

Pd. in a moment of boredom, I digged out an old character I had come up with about 5 years ago, originally intended as a mascot for my then thriving football website. It was meant as a Colombian Condor who’s crazy for football and I made several versions of him wearing different international shirts.

So here’s the new & updated version of “Willy Valdera” for the coming World Cup, accompanied by Okkebas, the cartoon mascot I made for my old student house’s site (go check it out by the way www.okkebas.com)

…and then there were 4

Yup, 4… not 1, or 2 as I was expecting, but 4!

That’s the amount of times I saw Mark Schwarzer, Middlesbrough goalkeeper, having to reach into his own goal to pick up the ball in this years UEFA Cup Final against Sevilla. It was a fantastic game, worthy of a european final, and worthy of the trip to Eindhoven.

Olie and me were in Eindhoven around 6 pm, two and a half hours ahead of the game. Just about enough time to eat something, have a couple of beers and walk around the city’s heart watching the red and white sea of people (both teams wear red and white) dancing, drinking, and enjoying the festive sphere that only football can give to the masses.

We had never been in the Philips Stadion (renamed PSV Stadion for the final because of UEFA commercial reasons), but it turned out to be a fantastic venue for the match. We bought the cheapest tickets there were – €35 - and were expecting to be much further away from the field, but instead, we had just the perfect view of the match. Not too high, not too low.

After the match, it was an hour’s trip back home with the train, and the satisfaction of finally been in the stadium for a european final. Next goal for the coming years… the Champions League Final!!!

Beneath, a few pictures from the match.

Going to the UEFA CUP final!

UHU!!! I’m going to the UEFA Cup final!!!

Since the final will be held here in the Netherlands, my friend Olie and I thought it would be a good idea to apply for the draw of the 6,000 ‘neutral supporters’ tickets, and we got 2 tickets!

Any person could apply to a maximum of 2 tickets, so we both did (to increase our chances) and in case we both got them, we would be taking the girls to the stadium… unfortunately for our ‘better halves’, I didn’t get chosen, so the 2 tickets Olie got will be having MY name and HIS.

Finally some pics from our new house!

It’s been nearly a month since we moved into our new place, and as it is looking a bit more decent now that we got rid of all the crap we had liying around and that everythings is (more or less) in the right place, we thought it was about time to invite some people over for a couple of beers, and take a few pictures to show our new place to the world.
